NEW CLUB YEAR and NEW MEMBERS:
The GFWC Woman's Club of Linthicum Heights opened the new program year with its annual tea in the newly renovated clubhouse with Linthicum's
Centennial as its main theme. The tea, a tradition since the club's founding in 1939, focused on the club's contributions to the Linthicum community via a skit by club
members and a trip down Linthicum's past with guest speaker Oscar "Skip" Booth, local historian and author. Also on the opening agenda was the induction of eight
new members by Midge Knell, membership chairman. Welcomed were: Heidi Ashton, Mary Brodowski, Davina Grace Hill, Peggy Hook, Dianne Mackert,
Sherry Maguire, Margie Marino, and Beth Nowell. In addition three more members: Melanie Carter, Heidi Price, and Dolores Geppi will be inducted at the
evening meeting.
UPCOMING:
September 22: The club's evening meeting, "Rosie The Riveter"will be held at 7PM on Sept. 22 at the clubhouse. The program will spotlight the women who took the place
of the men who during World War II left their civilian jobs to serve in the armed forces. Some of these women will tell their stories. During President Simon's first term her
theme was the same as Rosie's, "We Can Do It." for her 2008-2010 term she has chosen, "We Did It Before and We Can Do It Again."
September 25: At 10:30 AM Thursday, Sept. 25 at the clubhouse, the Community Health & Volunteer Services Committee will sponsor, “Everything You Always
Wanted to Know about Hospice.” A representative from hospice will talk about the program and answer questions. All club members welcome.
September 27: September will continue to be a busy month for club members. The club will sell hot dogs, sodas and water at The Annual Linthicum Community Fair 9 AM to 3:30 PM
Saturday, Sept. 27 rain date is Sept. 28 from 1 - 6.) All groups participating in the event donate 20% of their profits to the North County
Emergency Outreach Network. In addition, the club will also have a float in the fair's Centennial parade.
September 29: The Arts & Crafts Committee invites all club members to participate in the crafting sessions. No craft experience necessary. After the class, the crafters'
class has lunch at a local restaurant. on Sept. 29 the group will go to Pic-N-Paint Pottery Studio in Pasadena. Everyone picks an item of her choice to paint with the
cost varying from $8.00 to $50.00, depending upon the size of the item. All materials are supplied by the studio. After completing a project, it is left to be glazed and fired;
it will be picked up two weeks later. The group will meet at St. John’s parking lot at 9:30 AM to carpool. For more information, call Brenda Schwaab, 410-859-1071 or

Tuesday, Oct. 14 meeting, "Slots As A Constitutional Amendment"
Thursday, Oct. 23 the club will host an after-dinner “Bone China Tea” at 7 PM at St. John Lutheran Church to benefit
the National Osteoporosis Foundation. A representative will talk about the “Five Steps to Optimal Bone Health.” Tickets are
$10:00 and the evening event is open to the community.. Donations to the foundation will also be accepted. Seating is limited.
Tea “goodies” will be made with ingredients that promote good bone health. For tickets, call Ceil Dietz at 410-859-1795. Door
prizes will be awarded.
Saturday, Dec. 6 is the ANNUAL HOLLY MART. More information will be posted shortly.
Friday, Dec. 12 is the ANNUAL HOLIDAY GALA. More information will be posted shortly.
SPECIAL NOTICES:
AWARDS WON: In addition to the club winning first place in a variety of categories in GFWC programs at the GFWC Maryland Federation of Women's
Clubs' 2008 convention, several club members won ribbons and certificates for their creative efforts in a variety of GFWC programs. Midge Knell and Jean Rock won
for their photographic entries in the Volunteers In Action and Natural History categories and Celeste Riddle's "My Love Affair With Sewing", won the Short, Short Story
Contest. Other individual winners garnering ribbons in the Arts & Crafts area were Shirley Beck, Joan Childs and Brenda Schaab. The club's arts & crafts committee
won a blue ribbon for its club project. Student winners at the state level included art and writing. Kyle Volker of Glen Burnie High School won second place in Class 2,
High School Photography/Computer Art. Winners in the youth writing state contest (short story and poetry) were Alaina Keller, short story (grades 4, 5 & 6), Rebecca
Mount, poetry (grades 7,8,9) and Miranda Odachowski, poetry (grades 10, 11, & 12).
Arts & Crafts Committee: meetings are normally held the 4th Monday - September through April at
9:30 AM at the clubhouse.
PENNIES FOR ART: Save your pennies to supplement Youth Art and bring them each month for collection.
The EDUCATION COMMITTEE continues to collect General Foods box tops and Campbell’s UPC codes. It also requests you to Overlook Elementary
School (Code #1096) as your recipient school for Giant’s A+ Bonus Bucks. You must sign up each year in-store or register online at www.giantfood.com .
Literature Committee: meetings are held every 3rd Thursday at noon in members's homes, September
through May. All club members are welcome.
The INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS COMMITTEE is collecting Children's Chewable Vitamins for the Ethiopian Orphanage in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
The committee also accepts cash donations.
RONALD McDONALD HOUSE: This project collects the pull tabs from soft drink cans and small, travel-sized toiletries for the guests living at the house.
Please bring these items to the clubhouse each month.
The Evening Group of the club: normally meets the 4th Monday of each month at 7PM unless otherwise listed.
